Langen Terrace Frau Carlos

Hi Kathy it was on the left hand side on the main road into Langen a ways before the rail road crossing, not a free standing type, just a window that opened out to the street, living above.

I left in "67" and the kiosk run by Frau Carlos was a favorite, just wondering till when..... she kept us Langen kids supplied in "shells, gummies and bier"

Neal,
One of my experiences in Alaska as a surveyor dealt with the US Army. I was in the Fort Greely area out of Delta Junction. Our helicopter pilot became sick after dropping us off on the far side of the Tanana River, the Army came to our rescue, they flew over and picked us up in a Bell 205. It was very interesting since they did not let us handle any of our equipment, they loaded everything!
By the way I was one of those geeks that used GPS, survey grade, to do some of our surveys. It sure made running line alot easier. We no longer had to cut between our corners and we could do alot more in a day's work.
I would say Nevada and Utah are similar, but Nevada has more public land, it is 86% public land. A great place for a public land surveyor!
Have a great Christmas and a wonderful New Years!

Neal and Mike it has been great hearing from you two and the memories of old Rhein Main.I was thrilled to hear from your brother Wayne Neal.Wayne and I had a lot in common being we were the only disabled guys on Rhein Main.Mike your dad I remember him being at the airport the day the Rhein Main Allstars went to Williamsport to the Litttle League World Series. That is one of my special memories of Rhein Main of being part of seeing the guys off and wishing I was with them.Wayne taught me a lot about defending my self physically.Neal I became a Student Manager of the Northern Burlington County Regional High School Greyhound wrestling team in 1967 and 68 school year after returning to the states in July 1967.I ran into two brothers from Rhein Main at a high school wrestling meet one night.I was just in middle high at Rhein Main when I was there.Mike your Dad made Rhein Main the special place it became. The day I left I cried all the way to the states I loved Rhein Main that much. That base will always be a very special time and place in my life.Just to hear from you guys again makes it all very special.Dan Palmer

Neal,
No Pot, just alot of hash. The Germans were so liberal with drinking we all turned into drinkers at an early age. I gave it up about 15 years ago. I spent alot of time working in Asia and those guys take drinking REAL serious... and it is all Scotch and Brandy. i always loved the German beer. If you can find it there is a real nice Belgian beer called "Duvall" (sp) I translates to Devil and is one of the high octane beers for Flanders. It can be found here as an import.

Hey Neil, Welcome to the Brats Page. You were long gone before I got to R?M but you list all the same places that are in the front of my memories from the years in Germany. I too have been back a number of times but even when I went back after a few years in the Navy it seemed different. In a word I would say if felt "empty". I guess it was because almost all I had know there were gone at the time. Those were indeed some of the best years of our lives and I am sure you will find many people here that share that spirit. Welcommen!

Neal,
The last twenty months when Dad lived with us was not exactly the greatest time. Dad's memory had slipped and his health was not the greatest. We had no place to put him, so we moved him into our guest bedroom. When he first moved in he thought we were a nice couple from San Antonio. I started calling my Wife San Antonio Rose. We laugh about now. We worked with him and nursed him back to pretty good health both mentally and physically, considering he is almost 93 years old. We moved him into the Lodge (assisted living facility) which just opened a month ago and he seems to be enjoying himself. He is some what indepentent and does not feel like he is burdening us now. I certainly learned alot from him about his flying in WW2 (he flew the Hump) and his long term memory is pretty good! He flew an awful lot of different planes, I will have to make a list of them all from his flight log book. He speaks of flying P39, P40, P47, P51, B17, B24, B25, B26, C46, C47, T29, C54, T33, and T39, not to mention the planes he learned to fly in originally. I really have enjoyed hearing the stories! I will look back at this as a very special time to share with my Father, especially sine he never shared much with his kids growing up.
I had to look up exactly how many years I served with the Bureau of Land Management as a land surveyor 36 years 10 months plus 1 year 4 months of un used sick leave for a total of 38 years 2 months. I did retire January 2008. We have been living in Carson City, Nevada for the past twenty years, before that I spent 12 1/2 years in Alaska where I met my Wife. I also spent 3 years prior to Alaska working in Nevada out of Reno. I spent three years working out of Portland, Oregon before moving to Nevada the first time.
I did not serve in the military, which is one thing I regret. I attended college with a 2s deferment until 1969 or 1970 when ever the first draft lottery and I was number 325, pretty safe.
I have three step kids (2 sons and a daughter) all living in North Carolina, which is where my wife was born and raised. We have 5 grand children (3 girls and 2 boys) and we now have a great grand son about a month old.
The living in an income tax free state is pretty good, but I really would be living here anyways. We love the high desert, all the sun, Lake Tahoe, the area with all the golf courses and the Sierra Nevada Mtns. The Reno area also has a lot of named entainers and all sorts of activities like the National Air Races, Hot August Nights, Ballon Races, Virginia City and the Comstock Cowboys, and several Motor cycle events mainly Harleys.
You take care and keep in touch.
Mike
