Getting back to the stories, I have always told my children that funny stories now most often come from not so funny times when they actually happened! Wine tents on the Main? (that was painful the next day) Missing the last train from Frankfurt and "aquiring" a room? (man it got cold) How many at the AYA? We could write a book. Please share the stories. Lets see if we can jog some memories out of each other and have a few laughs along the way.
Ok, who remembers leaving school a “bit early” and riding the U and S trains? How about riding the trains without buying a ticket? Or riding the train without a ticket and getting busted, or almost busted by the ticket takers? Can anyone say jail break? Never seen so many kids move so fast in my life.
Are you kidding we rode in first class quite often before getting caught, and then we always played like the dumb Americans, and at that time paid for our tickets. They got pretty mad at us.
I think in 3.5 years I averaged paying about six times a year, maybe. That includes U-bahn, S-bahn, trains and buses. I think they had a task force set up for us by the time we left. In fact I think I saw it on Law & Order Deutchland...lol I have the next one. Does any body remember two ofthe craziest rides I have ever been on. 1) The tilti-whril from hell came to the base with a traveling fair. Just a spinning circle with a bench that tilted then bucked, throwing people into the center steel hub or across into the legs of the people on the other side..WHat a blast!!! 2) The multi-level go cart track on the Main during fasching(sp). I mean right on the water!! Drink until you can't walk then jumb into a go-cart in sub-freezing weather then add a level.
I remember the tilt-a-whirl; that had to be one of the best rides ever invented. I can hear the guys that invented it. Guy 1 “we need a new ride, any ideas?” Guy 2 “I’ve got one, let’s put a bunch of people into a round wire cage and spin them as fast as we can”. Guy 1 “Brilliant!!”
The carnival...always a highlight to the year. I would ride the Himalea (hymelaia??? spelling is way off) until my head hurt, but I didn't mind if I had a boys arm around me. And the bumper cars. Those crazy cars didn't have all the padding they do know and I remember the huge bruises I would get on my arms from being rammed.
Bumper cars, no wonder my neck and back are so screwed up, everytime I think of bumper cars I think of aba, or abba, which is it, playing in the background, and see the flashing lites. i loved the beer tents and carnivals on base, it was such great times, the only place in the world where you would see a 14 year old with a 2 litter beer mug sitting right next to his parents with theirs.. good times.
Remember the carnivals that were right out side of Neu Worfeldon? ABBA brings back memories. I have their "Greatest Hits" in the car. My 4 yr old loves the "Money" song- LOL. And my 70ish mother got me the CD- she has just started listening to them too.
I don't remember ever paying on the U-bahn from '69-'71. I heard about a couple people who got caught, but we knew all the tricks. They were high on bongwater if they thought we were going to pay for all those trips to shit park. That would've cost a fortune!
